First-ever 1.4mm single-chip camera is the worlds smallest

TDC is introducing the smallest-ever single-chip CMOS camera to the UK market for security, surveillance and medical applications, also video-enabled phones, webcams, toys and games

[UKPRwire, Mon Jul 30 2007] TDC is introducing the smallest-ever single-chip CMOS camera to the UK market. The new OV6920 CameraChip(TM) is the world's first 1/18-inch (1.4mm) sensor, providing broader applications and cost savings compared with existing best-of-breed 1/7-inch CMOS and 1/12-inch CCD imagers.

Supplied in a tiny 2.1 x 2.3mm chip-scale package, the device enables microscopic camera modules to be developed just 3.2mm in diameter. The result is a much lower degree of invasiveness in medical applications such as endoscopes and colonoscopy even allowing camera pills to be developed. It also makes for more discreet defence, security and surveillance applications, and the device can also be used in video-enabled phones, webcams, toys and games.

As well as the direct advantages of greater miniaturisation, the new CameraChip's size provides additional benefits in cost reduction and lower power consumption. Despite the small format, its proprietary architecture called OmniPixel2 ensures the highest image quality, clarity and performance.

With a total array size of 328 x 250, the OV6920 features SCCB-configurable automatic control of colour saturation, exposure, gain and gamma curve, together with aperture correction function. It only requires a clock and power to obtain an NTSC (320 x 240) composite signal output with a direct interface to VCRs and monitors.

The sensor runs from a single a 3.3V DC power supply. Consumption is a low 30mA under a 75 Ohm load, and only 20mA without loading, ensuring extremely long lifetime in battery-powered applications.
