SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic 2006 to attract over 200 golfers
Golfers from UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Germany, France, Malaysia & China headed for Kandy
[UKPRwire, Sat Oct 21 2006] The SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic, one of the major sporting events in the country is scheduled to attract up to 200 golfers from SriLankan Airlines’ 50 destinations around the world at the Victoria Golf Club in Kandy from October 25th to 28th.
Prominent among the countries from which players are set to test their skill on the hilly terrain include the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Germany, France, Malaysia and China.
“Such sporting events have helped in generating worldwide exposure of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty and the top class leisure and sporting facilities available in the country,” said Desiree Premachandra, SriLankan Airlines Country Manager for the UAE and Russia. “We have made major efforts to take advantage of such sporting events to communicate the country’s ideal tourism infrastructure and top class hospitality industry,” she said.
Sri Lanka’s climatic spread, ranging from dry-zone lowlands to the cool hill country and its variety of sports and adventure activities make it an ideal destination for an action-packed holiday.
Ms. Premachandra noted that as an organisation, SriLankan understood the important role that sports sponsorship has played and continues to play in projecting the country’s image as a dynamic international centre and has strived through sponsorship of major sports events to maximise their promotional value.
The tournament is being organised for the 11th consecutive year amid the breathtaking environs of the Victoria Golf & Country Resort in Kandy, Sri Lanka, that has been recently rated among the 100 most beautiful golf courses in the world by Golf Digest.
Victoria Golf Club is located on a 207-hectare site with an 8 km waterfront, overlooking the sweeping panorama of the Victoria Reservoir, with only the sounds of nature intruding on the silence of a golfing paradise.
This championship golf course is 6,190 meters long (par 73) designed by the world -renowned UK based golf architect Donald Steel and inaugurated early in 1999.
The fairways are rather narrow in a hilly countryside. Stately trees and avenues of coconut palms lend the course an immediate air of maturity. Impressive natural outcrops of rocks are a distinctive feature and indeed a hazard of the course. The Victoria Golf Club is situated 25 km east of Kandy and 150 km from Colombo.
Describing the Victoria Golf Course Donald Steel said, "Some golf courses have a splendid undulating terrain over which the holes are routed. Some golf courses have a scenic backdrop of hills and lakes, which excite the senses. However the Victoria Golf Course near Kandy is blessed with both attributes."
One of the most exhilarating and difficult holes at Victoria is the 473 yds. Par 4, Sixth. The drive from an elevated tee calls for distance, accuracy and nerves of steel, if the player is to have a chance of reaching the green in two.
Measuring 6,945 yds at its full championship length, Victoria's Par 73 layout has four Par 5 holes of which three are over 500 yds long. There are four excellent Par 3 holes ranging from the very short, but tricky 4th of 116 yds to the testing 210 yds 12th hole, a great Par 3 by any standard.
Sporting activities are integral to Sri Lankan life and the airline is involved in the promotion of international golf, surf, cricket and rugby tournaments among others.
