LANDLORDS STUDY FIRE SAFETY IN RENTED PROPERTY

[UKPRwire, Mon Mar 02 2009] Yorkshire region landlords are to receive a special briefing on fire safety in tenanted property – from two of the private rented sector’s acknowledged experts.
The half-day seminar at the Village Hotel in Otley Road, Leeds on Thursday (5 March) is part of a national campaign by the Residential Landlords Association to step-up fire safety standards in rented properties.
RLA lawyer and secretary Richard Jones and environmental health consultant Neil Marsden will conduct the seminar for officers and committee members from landlords associations in the region, as well as landlords themselves.
It follows last year’s publication of fire safety guidelines from three official bodies representing local authorities, environmental health professionals and chief fire officers. The guidelines, which became a milestone for fire safety enforcement in residential accommodation, closely followed various major changes in legislation governing the private rented sector.
“They now enable landlords to select the right fire safety precautions for their properties, to comply with legal obligations, and to self regulate their private rented sector. But landlords, and those who represent them, need better understanding of how local councils and fire and rescue authorities are approaching and enforcing this whole new situation as well as knowing the issues that are still unresolved,” says Neil Marsden.
Neil – an environmental health specialist who originally co-ordinated the introduction of West Yorkshire’s fire safety standards for private rented accommodation – is co-presenting the seminar with Richard Jones.
Richard - as lawyer for the RLA whose members own over 100,000 private rented properties throughout the UK - has represented professional interests at national and government level as well as advising landlord associations, throughout the north, on the introduction of fire safety measures.
