RED BEE OPTS FOR YOOMEDIA’S xPLAYER TO BOOST UKTV’S INTERACTIVE CAPABILITY

[UKPRwire, Tue Nov 20 2007] UKTV is to have access to a more sophisticated interactive play-out capability following a decision by Red Bee Media to upgrade the interactive facility it receives from YooMedia, the AIM-listed interactive media, gaming and mobile entertainment group.
YooMedia’s xPlayer system, initially installed by Red Bee in 2002, is now more intelligent in its allocation of bandwidth, allowing broadcasters to fit greater interactivity into less bandwidth. The system will be used by Red Bee clients, including UKTV, to enhance red button interactivity during commercials and programming. The system recognises when interactive elements are about to be broadcast and ensures all relevant data is delivered to the satellite at the point of broadcast. In addition to UKTV, xPlayer is also used to drive the interactive playout for Channel 4, Five and S4/C.
YooMedia will undertake the installation of the system into Red Bee Media’s Broadcast Centre in White City as well as providing ongoing technical support.
Interactivity has become increasingly important for broadcasters, both as a way of adding new interactive dimensions to repeat programming or by opening up new revenue streams through interactive advertising, games or competitions. xPlayer acts as an automated interactive scheduling system that integrates seamlessly with the client’s existing broadcast environment. Although widely in use by YooMedia on the Sky Digital platform in the UK, xPlayer can also be used to deliver to other digital platforms and interactive technologies. xPlayer, for example, is used to deliver interactive adverts to the Freeview digital terrestrial television platform.
The system can be used to update content on websites or trigger the sending of SMS messages to act as reminders or invitations to participate and interact. Moreover, as the proliferation of platforms on which viewers receive content continues to grow – IPTV, PCs, mobile phones, games consoles – xPlayer provides opportunities for broadcasters to keep their channels at the heart of their offering, while enabling the promotion and delivery of exciting new interactive services.
