Tribal Coordinates High Profile Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Technology Portals
Tribal is proud to announce its work on three high profile educational portals, the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Centres (STEM) Support Centres and the National Network of Science Learning Centres. These successful and exciting initiatives further reinforce Tribal’s position as a leading developer of software and business solutions for the public and educational sectors, and demonstrate Tribal’s passion for creating life-enhancing solutions using a collaborative and innovative approach.
[UKPRwire, Tue Mar 20 2007] The Regional STEM Support Centres provide a communication and information channel for access to, and advice about, regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics activities and events. Ideas for Science Week activities and projects, and contacts for links with science and industry can be accessed through the Tribal-developed web portal www.stemcentres.org.uk.
Speaking at the launch of the STEM Support Centre on the 9th January this year, London’s Mayor Ken Livingstone explained the impact of the initiative: 'The STEM Support Centre will help young people develop the skills and knowledge that London's employers are calling out for. And it will support the long-term future of the capital's enormous strength in universities, colleges and other knowledge-based institutions working in these fields. I wish this initiative every success.'
Based at the Science Learning Centre London, the Support Centre will be primarily a “virtual centre” using a web portal developed by Tribal for promoting STEM activities and schemes in the capital, supporting further training courses for teachers, and networking events for schools and further education institutions, industry and public bodies such as IBM, the Department of Health and Transport for London. The Centre will also be involved in outreach work supporting projects in parts of London where provision for sciences and qualified teaching staff is at its lowest.
The NCETM will connect everyone involved in teaching mathematics in England through a dynamic web portal developed by Tribal, in partnership with the University of Plymouth. The NCETM is designed to support the professional development of mathematics teachers at every stage of their career, from primary to adult education. Through the web portal teachers will be able to share best practice, download free teaching resources, join discussion forums, contribute to teacher’s web logs and access continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities. The portal will also act as a link between schools in England and other countries to enable teachers to share experiences and develop best practice.
At the launch of the £15 million initiative on 27th June 2006, Education Secretary Alan Johnson commented on its importance: “Having sound mathematics skills is a fundamental part of every child’s education and we are committed to ensuring that today’s children and young people get every opportunity and support to learn and develop those skills. To do this, we need to make sure that mathematics teachers are also getting the support and professional development they need. That is why this centre is so important, providing a vital tool for the teaching community.”
National Network of Science Learning Centres
Science Learning Centres are a national network for professional development in science teaching. The centres support teachers’ CPD, by providing information about the latest scientific ideas, and teaching approaches. Nine regional centres are in place around England, which are further supported by a National Centre for the UK, and a web portal developed by Tribal, through which science professionals from teachers to technicians can access online resources, and exchange ideas. These well equipped centres aim to provide the resources and network of contacts to ensure that content delivered to teachers, lecturers and technicians is relevant and contemporary.
