Shropshire School leading the way in innovative technology

Parents and staff at Charlton School in Telford are set to benefit from an innovative IT system the school has developed.

[UKPRwire, Tue Aug 04 2009] Mike Jones of Charlton School said, “these new developments will enable staff to rapidly drill down into data held on the school’s Management Information System (MIS) including pupil behaviour and progress, as well as being able to investigate individual groups, subjects or students. Having all this information at their fingertips will mean they will be able to make proactive intervention when needed, as well as reducing their administrative workload.”

Engaging Parents
Parents of pupils at the school are also set to benefit as Mike adds, “through our Learning Gateway, we aim to provide parents with the personal touch they demand by giving them online but secure access to information held on their child that they can access anytime, anywhere.

Trials are currently taking place with staff but the school has been quick to recognise the potential of the sophisticated but user-friendly tools they have developed and are planning on showcasing to other schools in the area. To help them achieve this, Charlton have set up a commercial partnership with Novotronix Ltd, a Wolverhampton-based software development consultancy.

Steve Eyton-Jones, Commercial Director at Novotronix said they were delighted to be working with Charlton School on this project and added: “Charlton have built some excellent technology for their school. Not only are the reporting aspects of the system second- to-none, they are also extremely user-friendly. However, a number of changes are necessary to make it more commercially viable and usable by other educational establishments. Using our commercial and technical expertise with Microsoft Sharepoint, we are developing a number of generic parts to the system that will enable it to be easily adopted by other schools”.

Charlton are also aiming to set up a Centre of Excellence at the school. Drawing on the commercial experience of Novotronix and their own educational expertise, they hope to establish a showcase for Learning Platform technologies, which they hope all local schools will be able to utilise.
